Kimberly and Alice worked as volunteers in the emergency room of the municipal hospital of Ambato, Ecuador. As United States pre-med college students they did not have the hands on training that Ecuadorian students of their age have had, and with Spanish as their second language, it made an interesting time for them. Ambato, Ecuador lies in northwestern South America. Ambato (San Juan de Ambato) is a city in the centre of Ecuador, lying on the banks of the Ambato River. It is the capital of the province of Tungurahua, at an elevation of 2,600 meters above sea level. The population is about 155,000. The city is a leading commercial and transportation center on a fertile region near the northern foot of the volcano Tungurahua, which is still active with a major eruption way back in August 2006. Look at the pictures of this monster-volcano Tungurahua - as taken from an Ambato home. It is towering over the city, ready to crush it. On Mondays the city hosts one of the largest fruits, vegetables, and assorted meats markets in the country. In addition, Ambato casts the famous "Fiesta de las Flores y de las Frutas" (Flowers and Fruits Festival) in February. As a way to recover from the tragic earthquake of August 5, 1949, Ambato began its tradition of the Fruits and Flowers Festival. It is now a major tourist attraction held in the city. During this time, schools and businesses close for different varieties of parades and shows, and a "Queen of Ambato" is also chosen from representatives of each high school, some government offices, and the police force.

Ambato, capital de la provincia del Tungurahua, se encuentra en el centro de la sierra del Ecuador. Esta hermosa ciudad es conocida como Ciudad de las Flores y de las Frutas, Cuna de los Tres Juanes, Ciudad Cosmopolita, Jardín del Ecuador". Esta cuenta con establecimientos educativos tan prestigiosos como lo es el Colegio Diocesano San Pio X, el cual ha conseguido la certificacion de calidad iso 9001 ademas han recibido recientemente el primer premio iberoamericano a la excelencia educativa en Panama. Este colegio ha sido recomendado como el mejor de la zona de la provicia, de la ciudad, y uno de los mejores del pais. La población de ciudad de Ambato es de 287.282 habitantes (censo de población, INEC 2001). Su clima es Templado seco y la temperatura es de aproximadamente 14 y 19 grados centígrados. Esta asentada en la rivera del río Ambato, del cual toma su nombre. A sus habitantes se les denomina ambateños.

Ambato fue destruida varias veces por terremotos y erupciones, su última destrucción fue el 5 de agosto de 1949: un terremoto destruyó la ciudad casi en su totalidad pero, gracias a la tenacidad de sus habitantes, se logró levantar nuevamente en menos de dos años, en honor a esta lucha se celebra la "Fiesta de las Flores y las Frutas" en los días de Carnaval. Esta celebración ha trascendido fronteras y hoy por hoy es una de las fiestas más importantes del Ecuador.

Ambato es la ciudad cuna de varios hombres ilustres entre los cuales se encuentran Juan Montalvo (gran ensayista del siglo XIX), Juan León Mera (autor de la letra del Himno Nacional del Ecuador) y Juan Benigno Vela.

El Hospital Municipal

El I. Municipio de Ambato, con el afán de dar un servicio integral a la Colectividad Ambateña, tiene como una de sus prioridades el brindar atención en salud a la ciudadanía de Ambato, Tungurahua y de otras Provincias que nos visitan especialmente en los días feriados.

Para ello cuenta con un Hospital Municipal, cuya misión es la de servir al paciente y a su familia brindándole servicios de salud de calidad con profesionales de alto nivel. Dentro de los objetivos de su visión es la de crear un Seguro Municipal Popular con el objeto de dar atención médica en diferentes áreas considerando que la promoción y la prevención serán los elementos fundamentales en esta nueva cobertura de servicios al paciente y a su familia, respetando las diferencias culturales y de cualquier otra naturaleza.

Al momento el Hospital Municipal labora como Hospital del Día y cuenta con los Servicios de Pediatría, Cirugía Pediátrica, Traumatología, Cirugía General con intervenciones quirúrgicas de Fístulas, Hernias, Colecistectomías.

También se cuenta con un Ginecólogo para la atención en consulta externa, quirúrgicamente se realiza ligaduras y en forma permanente se realiza la toma de papanicolaus, a futuro implantaremos los servicios de partos, cesáreas, histerectomías y demás.

El servicio de oftalmología al momento brinda consulta médica externa y cuando el caso amerita intervención quirúrgica como en el Pterigium, Cataratas, Estrabismos, se lo realiza en la mañana y en poco tiempo después de la cirugía, unos 30 minutos aproximadamente el paciente regresa a su domicilio.

Otorrinolaringología es otro servicio que brinda solo en el área de consulta externa.

Medicina general atiende todos los días, de Lunes a Viernes a pacientes adultos en horarios de la mañana de 11H00 a 13H00 y en la tarde de 14H30 a 16H30.

Además contamos con servicios de apoyo en el área de Odontología, Rehabilitación, Rayos X y Farmacia con un descuento del 12% en todos los productos.

El precio de las consultas en Pediatría, Rehabilitación, Odontología, es de un dólar ($ 1.00), y en los otros servicios de especialidad es de un dólar cincuenta centavos ($ 1.50).

Una de las políticas del Hospital Municipal es la de brindar servicios de salud a bajo costo y permitir al paciente la posibilidad de suscribir convenios de prestación de servicios a través de alguna Institución, Asociación o cualquier otra Organización bien constituida legalmente que respalde al afiliado a fin de que éste pueda obtener servicios médicos y cancele por los mismos al fin de cada mes o si el rubro de los servicios es alto, se los pueda diferir para dos o tres pagos, para lo cual la organización nos respalda y se responsabiliza del descuento que se debe realizar.

En forma permanente realizamos campañas de atención médica gratuita en consulta externa y cirugías que se programan para determinados eventos como las cirugías de catarata gratuitas que se realizan gracias al apoyo que recibimos del Club de Leones.

Otro servicio que se brinda es la donación de marcos para lentes a personas de escasos recursos económicos.

Se confecciona pañales ortopédicos los mismos que se venden a precios módicos.

Al momento contamos con un stock de medicinas que estamos donando a pacientes pediátricos como suero oral, a niños y madres anémicos donando el hierro oral y el ácido fólico, también contamos con un pequeño lote de antibióticos y analgésicos.
