The Astronout Van is a specially outfitted vehicle used to transport astronauts to the rocket.

This specially outfitted and equipped vehicle was specially made to transport the early Astronauts to the launch pad. The were used from the Early Space Race, first manned Mission to space, then the Apollo missions, then refitted and redesigned for the Space Shuttle missions. During the Apollo and Early Space Race, it was usually an 8 mile long ride. The astronauts inside had to, originally, use Ventilators to control the temperature of their spacesuits until they were hooked into the Life Support Systems of the Space Pod they were going into.
