Manaus is a city in the northern part of Brazil and capital of Amazonas State. Located on the Rio Negro near its confluence with the Rio Solimões (also known as the Amazon River), it is the chief port and a hub for the region's extensive river system. It is also a common point of departure for tourists visiting the rest of the Amazon region.
Situated on the banks of the Rio Negro (meaning Black River, because of the dark color of the water), Manaus is an important centre for ecological tourism. One of its most popular attractions is the Ponta Negra beach, 13 kilometres (8 miles) from the centre of the city, where, when the river is low, the sands are exposed right down to the river bed, forming a beautiful contrast with the dark waters of the river itself.

The old rubber barons dreamed of transforming Manaus into a European style city and called it "The Paris of the Tropics". With the end of the rubber boom, Manaus went into decline and only entered a period of renewed development in the 1950s. A turning point was reached in 1967, when the Manaus Free Zone was established by the federal government. From that date on, the capital of Amazonas has passed through great changes, becoming an important industrial centre for the manufacture of electrical and electronic goods (nowadays, Manaus is the supplier for the entire country of items such as DVD players and computer monitors).

Manaus é um município brasileiro, capital do estado do Amazonas, situada na confluência dos rios Negro e Solimões. Cidade mais populosa da Amazônia, é conhecida mundialmente pelo ecoturismo e por suas indústrias. Surgiu em 1669 com o forte de São José do Rio Negro. Foi elevada a vila em 1832 com o nome de Manaus, que significa "mãe dos deuses", em homenagem à nação indígena dos Manaós, sendo legalmente transformada em cidade no dia 24 de outubro de 1848 com o nome de Cidade da Barra do Rio Negro. Somente em 4 de setembro de 1856 voltou a ter seu nome atual. Ficou bastante conhecida no começo do século XX, na época áurea da borracha. Nessa época foi batizada como Coração da Amazônia e Cidade da Floresta. Atualmente seu principal motor econômico é o Pólo Industrial de Manaus, em grande parte responsável pelo fato de a cidade deter o 7º maior PIB do país, atualmente (Origem: Wikipédia, a enciclopédia livre.)

Acesso

O acesso a Manaus é feito por via fluvial, terrestre ou aérea. As viagens fluviais ou rodoviárias exigem grande disponibilidade de tempo, devido à disposição geográfica da cidade, no coração da floresta amazônica. Para o uso das rodovias é recomendável consulta ao Departamento Nacional de Estradas de Rodagem - DNER acerca das condições de tráfego das BR-319 (Manaus-Porto Velho) e BR-174 (Manaus-Boa Vista). A pavimentação da BR-174 já permite viagens rodoviárias à Venezuela e ao Caribe.

Clima

O clima é equatorial úmido, com temperatura média anual de 27ºC. As médias das mínimas e máximas, são respectivamente 22ºC e 23º C. A temperatura máxima absoluta registrada é de 38º C (à sombra).
A umidade relativa do ar média anual fica em torno de 80%. A precipitação média anual aproximadamente é de 2.300 mm.
A região possui duas estações distintas: a Chuvosa (inverno), de dezembro a maio, período em que a temperatura mostra-se mais amena, com chuvas freqüentes; e a Seca (verão ou menos chuvosa), de junho a novembro, época de sol intenso e temperatura elevada, em torno de 38ºC, chegando a atingir quase 40ºC, no mês de setembro. Costumam ocorrer, durante todo o ano, fortes pancadas de chuva de pouca duração.

Regime dos Rios

Assim como o clima, o regime de cheia e vazante dos rios também varia a cada seis meses, atingindo os níveis máximos nos meses de maio a julho; e mínimos, nos meses de outubro a dezembro.
