At Pongoland in the Leipzig Zoo a Chimpanzee chews on a piece of fruit as he sits on thick branches watching the crowd of visitors.
Pongoland, the world of the apes, is the first completely finished area [of the Leipzig Zoo's renovation project] which was opened in 2001. This unique Research Centre is a cooperation project with the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology (MPI-EVA, http://www.eva.mpg.de, http://www.mpg.de). Scientists of the MPI-EVA who study the development of humanity sometimes conduct, in sight of the public, behaviour observation on the monkeys in order to find out more about their abilities and therefore draw conclusions about the origin of human beings.
